Eating Out + Local Restaurant Guide

Eating out can be a hurdle when it comes to making healthy choices. It’s inevitable that you will find yourself eating at a restaurant with friends and family.

While most options at restaurants are not optimal for weight loss, you can make the best decision for yourself.

Regardless of the cuisine, it’s important to be mindful of the portions of protein, vegetables/fruit, and carbohydrates.

The same goes for alcoholic beverages. The “devil is in the dose” as they say. The fancy, high sugar cocktails and high calorie craft beers are drinks you want to avoid to stay in line with your weight loss goals.

Pro tips:

  • Before heading out, look up the menu online so you’ll be prepared when it’s time to order (many have healthy menu sections).

  • Don’t be shy about asking your server what the healthiest options on the menu is.

  • Most restaurants give big servings, so consider splitting your meal with somebody or take half home.

  • Ask for dressings, toppings, and sauces one the side and use sparingly.

  • Look for healthy swaps like extra veggies/side salad for bread.

  • Steer clear of deep fried items like egg rolls, tempura, chicken, etc.

  • Avoid creamy sauces and extra cheesy foods like alfredo, lasagna, and carbonara.

  • For desserts, order 1-2 for the table to share with your family/friends, just taking a few bites.

  • For cocktails, opt for a vodka and club (or diet) soda with lime or ask the bartender for a “skinny” (margarita, moscow mule, etc) which has less alcohol and calories.

  • For beer, choose light beer instead of the higher calorie IPA’s and Stouts.

  • Limit the adult beverages to 1-2 and drink water in between drinks.
